Description of the activity LTT - C1 - Short-term joint training staff

IES Atenea have organized the first mobility and activity LTT -C1 within the project “Basic Science all over Life” for a group of teachers from 6 countries during 3 days in Seville.

Workshop Summary – Training staff C1 activity: “New Methodologies Based on Emotional Education and Positive Psychology”
“Students who are not emotionally regulated cannot explore, nor can they learn”.

The activity is carried out, organized and conducted by Rocio Carbonero (Psychology Degree), teacher and deputy principal of IES Atenea.

This activity focuses on new methodologies based on emotional education and positive psychology.

Within the framework of Positive-Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience we tried to show some skills and tools to the teaching staff to improve communication, relationship, self-esteem, ...to succeed both academically and socially.

Social and Emotional Learning skills, such as active-listening, empathy, self-awareness, resilience, solving-problems can improve attention and concentration and increase focus and self-regulation reducing levels of stress and anxiety. It is therefore the gateway to motivate the willingness to learn.

More and more psychologists and teachers think that Emotional Intelligence is as important as IQ to learn and to go further in life.

From our contribution we have proposed activities to explore and teach techniques of emotional self- regulation for teachers.

Every teacher involved in the project can learn these techniques for a later use in their different subjects.

We put into practice our experience in some techniques with students giving them tools to improve attention and concentration, not only at school but also in real life. Social and Emotional Learning skills can raise their levels of empathy, resilience and self-esteem and is also a good way to reduce stress and anxiety which are, in many cases, the reason for dropping out of school. Our goal is giving our students a strong reason for learning and the tools to achieve their goals in real life.

Encouraging students to build awareness, understanding and control of their thought processes – also known as metacognition – has been identified as one of the most cost-effective ways to improve learning. It’s also thought to help boost performance in subjects such as Mathematics, Science and English.

Before the mobility:
We sent some documents by email to the participant staff in the different countries to prepare and work on the face-to-face workshop beforehand. ( Annex 1)

During the mobility:
Four training staff sessions of two hours each conducted by Rocio Carbonero. Digital smartboard and presentation program (Annex 2)

Teachers from different countries shared experiences, activities and tools to improve motivation, active-listening and self-awareness in our students. Meeting a group of teachers from different countries to research and share knowledge and good practices in order to better motivate our students to learn.

The activity that we proposed with the teaching staff was aimed at creating an atmosphere of safety, confidence and autonomy for the students in the classroom.

After the presentation of the content using the smartboard we worked out some documents to share out among the teachers involved.

We worked on aspects of emotion and motivation such as emotional management, the internal reward system, how to generate curiosity and intrigue to motivate, the stages of learning, how attention is formed and how new technologies and multiple stimuli influence it.

We carried out some activities to find out the best attitude and performance of the teachers during their classes with the students, in order to solve the problems that arise.

Every teacher involved present their experiences and share ideas. We did some mindfulness and concentration training. We worked mindfulness techniques in the different subjects and we applied our knowledge
about social and emotional learning skills and positive psychology in a practical way.

The group of 20 teachers was working together in order to improve our students´ self-esteem, social and communication skills and also motivation. We shared our problems and experiences in the classroom, solving-problems techniques in order to put all of them into practice in our lessons with students.

The working methods used require cooperation among teachers and a shared understanding of the importance of SEL, to reinforce the role of the teacher and give a secure attachment. Working methods must be versatile, they must activate students to allow differentiation, for example work in groups, pairs and project work alongside independent work.

We carried out activities to find out the best attitude and performance of the teachers during their classes with the students, in order to solve the problems that arise.

Through the different workshops we worked with teachers on the mechanisms on which motivation and attention are based.

We tried to build the link for significant learning to take place, and we start by building a safety base for students in the classroom.
